Im going to check this out this weekend. A ‘14 CTS Luxury 2.0t. 66,021 miles. The thing is though, Carfax states: Accident reported Vehicle involved in a rear-end collision with another motor vehicle, Airbags did not deploy. It doesn’t look like it has been though. Because of that minor accident, the dealer is asking $13,850. NP or CP?

If you plan on driving it until the wheels fall off, NP. If you ever want to sell it, CP.

How long ago was the accident? I’m always wary of ones that are very recent, because damage that wasn’t fixed properly may not be visible. If it was recent, you may not see the seal broken on the taillight so condensation builds, the seal around the trunk broke, so now water leaks in, or anything else.

However, if the wreck happened two years and 30,000 miles ago, any of that would be evident on inspection.

Might pay a bodyshop to have a look at it, but I’m leaning NP unless the damage was very recent and/or you plan to sell it ever.

I’m not averse to minor accident vehicles. I’ve been in minor accidents, specifically I’ve been rear ended several times. I then drove those fixed cars for long enough to know that the accident had no effect on the car.

As long as it’s properly repaired, NP. If you can have it inspected by an independent auto body shop (something I did for my last purchase) then you will know if it was repaired properly.

CP. Avoid, avoid the 2.0T. I researched the 2012-2014 ATS with the same engine extensively including forums when I was considering it. You don’t want that AND the unreliable CUE The 3.6 is way more smoother, and reliable.

If you don’t plan to keep it for long it’s fine but you’re going to get shafted when you want to sell it.

Thats the downside I’m considering, the trade in/resale value down the line. I plan the keep the car for years, but in 6-7 years it might only be worth 3 grand because of the accident compared to 8 for a non accident example.

If it was recent, you may not see the seal broken on the taillight so condensation builds, the seal around the trunk broke, so now water leaks in, or anything else.

This. But the dealer assured me it was repaired thoroughly (of course they did). But the accident happened back in September of ‘15, and according to the Carfax, at the time it happened the car had anywhere between 35 and 42 thousand miles. I will have to consider a body shop to look at it because this price is too good to pass up.

Yea same here. Ive never been adverse to minor accident vehicles either. Most people just see accident and avoid totally. But if there was no airbag deployment or frame damage, you should be good. But I am considering having a body shop look at the vehicle if I am going to consider this seriously.

Really? You sure you arent talking about the 2.5? Ive never heard or seen anything wrong with the 2.0T. Ill have to do some research myself.

But I am worried about long term value when it comes time for it to be traded.

I’ve been in accidents with significant body damage that was repaired well and never bothered me again. Have it inspected and don’t shy away if the job was done right. This car is going to keep depreciating regardless. So buy it because you love it, and don’t let anxiety about resale eat at you. I feel like so many of us lose some of the joy of a new car by already worrying about how much we can sell it for before we have even bought it.

check both the CTS and ATS forums. There are tons of older posts about them. Just one example thread:

THIS . Thats was my whole worry when I first saw this car. Thinking 6-7 years down the line about resale and trade in value. The difference in value between this example and one that hasn’t been in an accident with the same amount of miles is about $5-6 grand. But you’re right, cars like this take a hit regardless. But I do love the CTS.

I’m pretty sure my K900 won’t be worth a wad of bubblegum scrapped off my shoe when I’m done with it. I knew going in that I’ll be lucky to get a couple grand trade in on whatever I buy next.

Thanks for this. Looks like there are piston problems. But some people are saying its because some owners have tuned them and others are saying the its just the engine itself. And of course there are a bunch of people saying that they haven’t had any problems at all.

I would LOVE a K900. They do seem to be holding their value better than the Equus. I’ve only ever seen one K900 under 20 grand and I think its because it was Blue.

Mine is blue. I got it for $26k, mostly because of the slightly higher mileage and the fact that they price-reduced to move it when it spent a couple months on their lot.

The K900s are MY2015 or newer. The Equus has been around a bit longer. I suspect that’s part of the reason you can find cheaper Equus examples.

I’ve been in 2 accidents in my Outback. One minor.. just ripped the rear bumper skin off and took a chunk out of the right rear wheel and tire. This was recent, and has obviously caused no lingering issues.

The other (I rear ended someone) crunched up the front pretty bad. Hood, headlights, bumper, grille, radiator support, etc all damaged. Quarter panels were fine. The impact was hard enough for my cargo in the back to smash out the windshield, head unit, and crack the top of the shift knob. No airbags though. Insurance paid out almost $7k to fix it. This was almost 2 years and 35,000 miles ago.

You’d have a hard time ever knowing that the car had taken this damage. I’ve poked my head around, and I can find two small blemishes on non-structural steel near the front of the car. A missing bolt left me with an exhaust leak, but otherwise, the work done was great. This is my drive into the ground car, out of necessity (save the manuals), and resale has never been a concern. It goes down the road flawlessly, wears its tires as evenly as a Subaru can, has no odd squeaks, rattles, or anything.

I agree with the others.. if you’re going to keep it, use it, abuse it, love it... don’t worry about a vehicle that’s been properly repaired. If you’re looking for something to drive for a couple years for free, buy a Tacoma.
